Applying Retail Strategies to Item Merchandising

William Grosso @ March 14, 2010

I gave a talk at the Game Developer Conference in in San Francisco.
The fundamental point is simple: we’re in the middle of a sea-change in the gaming industry. The experimentation with “free to play” is over and then rush to embrace virtual items as a revenue model is on. As an industry, we’re replacing [...]

John Stallings, Rest in Peace

William Grosso @ February 5, 2009

I went to grad school. Never finished. John Stallings was my thesis advisor. One of the smartest, one of the best, and one of the nicest, people I have ever met.
Today, I found out that John died last November.
Rest in peace, father John.

Chris Richardson for 3.5 Hours

William Grosso @ January 17, 2009

If you’ve been hearing more and more about cloud computing, are a java developer, and are wondering how to get started, here’s a great starting point: Chris Richardson, founder of the CloudTools open source project and CloudFoundry, is giving a 3.5 hour overview.
I can personally vouch for Chris: bright guy, knows his stuff, reasonably good [...]

My Java SIG Talk

William Grosso @ January 10, 2009

On January 6, I gave a talk at SDForum’s Java SIG.
It was a little bit of an unusual talk for me. Prior to this talk, I hadn’t spoken at a Java event in for a little over three years. My attention, to put it mildly, has been elsewhere. But, even though I don’t pay much [...]

I Hope Slideshare Doesn’t Go Out Of Business

William Grosso @ January 10, 2009

Most of what’s on there (and on scrib’d) seems kind of …. well, let’s just say that most of what people are sharing should have been kept private. And being supported by google ads in what’s looking to be a fairly sustained advertising downturn is a scary prospect.
But, on the other hand, it’s an awesomely [...]

On Proebsting’s Wish List

William Grosso @ January 2, 2009

So I’m preparing the slides for my talk on Tuesday, which is turning out to involve a lot of thinking about programming languages.
One of the thing’s I’m revisiting is a talk by Todd Proebsting entitled “Disruptive Programming Language Technologies”1
It’s a glossy talk, very high level and talking about what might make for the next great [...]

I’m Consistent, is that Boring?

William Grosso @ December 26, 2008

I’m spending most of today preparing for my upcoming Java SIG talk (Jan 6, Cubberley Community Center in Mountain View). The abstract for the talk is:
The rise of next-generation languages that run on top of the JVM is probably the most interesting thing to happen in the Java universe since the combination of the Spring [...]

The Next Phase of the Web

William Grosso @ December 21, 2008

I spoke at SDForum on December 4. It happened like this:

Sometime over the summer, I was unemployed. I had just left Engage, wasn’t yet at Twofish, and was playing around with some ideas and some technologies.
Paul O’Rorke, who ought to know better, invited me to speak at the SAM SIG.
I accepted and said something like [...]

Cloud Computing and Beyond: The Web Grows up (finally)

William Grosso @ September 27, 2008

Another week, another great SDForum Event.
I’ve been a volunteer at SDForum for a while, helping it educate the valley about the almost-bleeding edge in software. And, I’m proud to say: the organization is continuing to do amazing things.
Witness: the cloud computing event.
With our typical quasi-engineering skill at marketing, the first thing you see is the [...]
