70% of Developers are Writing Mobile Applications

William Grosso @ September 4, 2006

I ran across a summary of a report by Evans Data Corporation today. It’s from December 1, 2005 and it’s very surprising.  To wit:

  1. The survey found that Client/Server application development has surged 30% in the last six months and is the most developed type of software after a three year decline.
  2. The survey also found that development for 64-bit architectures increased by 61% from Fall 2004.
  3. Seven in ten developers in North America are developing mobile applications, 27% are developing Thin mobile apps for mobile devices followed by 22% developing Slim mobile apps (a combination of thin and rich) and 20% developing Rich mobile applications.

Are any of these really true? I almost believe the first one, would only believe the second one if the 64 bit community was so small that this change is almost invisible in the larger software development community, and find the last one very confusing.

Part of me thinks “it’s obvious: they added 27 + 22 + 20 and came up with 7 out of 10, not realizing that the options aren’t mutually exclusive.”

Part of me thinks “Naah. They couldn’t have done that. Plus, even 27% feels high: that’s 1 in every 4 software developers.”

Thoughts? Anyone know what the real numbers are?
